The Gemini on Child Stars and Disney Queens

Demi Lovato, 18, entered rehab yesterday, subsequently becoming the first of the modern Disney queens to crack.

To teenagers (or is it “tweenagers”?), Demi is best known for Camp Rock, Sonny with a Chance, and dating a Jonas brother. To older people, people whose main source of news might be ONTD, she’s best known as the subject of this blind item (for those too lazy to click, it involves a lot of coke and public sex). She’s also been outspoken about the impact of bullying, and apparently had some issues with cutting.

A Disney star entering rehab has long been expected, though I’ll be honest and admit that I thought 1) Miley would be the first and 2) it wouldn’t happen til at least late-2011. Growing up in modern Hollywood and having to work as hard as these kids do (Disney stars aren’t allowed to “just” act–these days, they need to act, dance, sing, and hopefully star in a Disney movie that will result in the need for a worldwide tour), it’s not surprising that they either break down from all the pressure or turn to drugs to deal with the pressure. It’s part of why I find Willow Smith’s rise to fame so disturbing (and yes, I know I just wrote a post about why people shouldn’t hate on Willow. I’m a Gemini. Dual minds and all that.)

So what’s the point of this post? I really don’t know. I could write about how sad it is that people seem to be on pins and needles waiting for the next Britney/Lindsay-style breakdown. I could write about The Evil Disney Corporate Machine. I could write about how the insistence that this about Demi’s body-image issues just makes me more convinced it’s about drugs (see: Evil Disney Corporate Machine. See also: Mary-Kate Olsen, circa 2004.). But the fact remains, barely-18-year-old girl thought her life was spiraling out of control enough to need rehab. And whatever the reason, good for her for seeking help, and I hope she finds what she needs.

That said, this post has been entirely too serious, and I will be back later this week to talk about the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or something.
